A Day in the Life: HVAC/R Technician
On November 18, 2020

As long as people rely on air conditioners in their offices and refrigerators in their homes, HVAC/R technicians will stay busy. I'm Wyatt, and I'd like to show you why heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration is an excellent career field to enter.

What's an Average Day Like for HVAC/R Technicians?

I spend my days traveling between different sites to perform installations, maintenance, and repairs for clients. My company assists companies, schools, hospitals, and private residences, so some jobs are more complex than others. My duties include: reading blueprints, troubleshooting HVAC/R systems, testing pipes and connections for leaks, replacing and repairing defective equipment, safely disposing fluids, reporting on system performance, and much more. Each system is like a new puzzle to solve, which I enjoy.

Career Opportunities in HVAC/R

Every technician should be trained in all aspects of HVAC/R, as this will lead to a better understanding of and more success with complex systems. However, there are many opportunities to specialize. For instance, I am the only technician at my company with experience in installing solar panels. You could work for a company or even establish your own, once you gain enough experience and clients. Compared with other careers, HVAC/R has a high growth rate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that HVAC/R positions would increase by 13% between 2018 and 20281.

Why Choose Stautzenberger College?

You could complete Stautzenberger College's HVAC/R diploma program in as little as 10 months! You don't need a high school diploma to apply. This program is Toledo Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors Association (THACCA)-approved and counts for 576 credit hours toward an apprenticeship program (once the full training is complete). After graduation, you also have the option of earning your associate degree in as little as seven more months.

This program covers topics such as: Fundamentals of Welding and Heat Pumps; HVAC Air Delivery Systems; Steam and Commercial Hydronic Systems; Troubleshooting Controls, Motors, and Cooling; and many more. The College also offers free resources such as tutoring, resume assistance, and mock interviews to help students prepare for their future careers. That's because at Stautzenberger College, you're more than just another student. You're part of the family.
