What is HVAC/R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration)?

HVAC/R is the abbreviation for Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. These areas are commonly grouped together as a skilled trade and work in HVAC/R may offer a great career. A qualified HVAC/R Technician is someone who installs, maintains and repairs HVAC/R systems such as heating and cooling systems in residential homes and commercial buildings. While HVAC/R Technicians are typically trained in all areas, they may choose to focus strictly one just one of heating, air conditioning, ventilation or refrigeration systems. Additionally, HVAC/R Technicians may specialize further in the installation, maintenance or repair of these systems depending on personal preferences. Further specialization may be found with water-based heating systems, solar technology or other sub-domains of the overall HVAC/R world.

What Career Options are Available in HVAC/R?

An HVAC/R Technician, Mechanic or Installer primarily performs HVAC/R work. Careers as an HVAC/R Technician vary greatly depending on the nature of their assignment (repair, installation, maintenance) and whether they specialize in any area (heating, ventilation, air conditioning or refrigeration). HVAC/R Technicians are employed by both corporate entities as well as companies dedicated to specific types of HVAC/R maintenance and repair. Sometimes HVAC/R Technicians are self-employed and establish their own clients and careers. Some examples of the types of activities an HVAC/R Technician will handle include:

  • Studying blueprints
  • Testing pipe and connections for leaks
  • Repairing or replacing defective equipment
  • Improving HVAC/R system performance through new technology
  • Assembling and installing HVAC/R equipment
  • Measuring and reporting on HVAC/R performance

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers in Ohio are expected to increase 15% between 2016 and 2026.1
