“What do you want to do with your life?” We ask kindergartners for their answers but are often unsure of our own responses. While some individuals have a singular drive early on that fuels their career path, many feel lost even as adults. Medical billing and coding specialist, veterinary technician, paralegal, construction manager, business manager, and the list keeps going. Sometimes, the multitude of options can feel overwhelming rather than liberating. Add to that the decisions about what degree to pursue, which school to attend, and what type of work schedule suits your needs, and it's easy to feel mired in confusion.

Before you plunge into a new program, take your time to consider the following:

Is this what you want to do? Your friends and family members can be wonderful resources when selecting an occupation. They know enough about you to understand your interests, can offer a second opinion, and often point out characteristics of yourself that you don't fully realize. However, they cannot do your job for you. Ultimately, you are the one who lives with the consequences of your decision, so choose based on your interests.

Are you passionate about this career? It is critical to consider practical factors such as salary and job demand. However, being excited about your field is equally as important. If you don't love your work, you won't be able to achieve your true potential and you're more likely to burn out.

Do you have the will to see it through to completion? Don't select your career on a whim. No matter which path you take, you're bound to face challenges, whether it be in completing coursework, applying for jobs, or resolving issues within the workplace. Be ready to put your all into whichever you choose.

Most importantly, don't be afraid of failure. Just use your answers from the above questions to guide you and keep on moving. If you're still uncertain, our career services team is happy to help.
