On September 28, 2021

Being a parent doesn't mean you have to give up on your dream career. Just ask Renee Moyer, a Stautzenberger College graduate. “I was working dead-end jobs, not going anywhere,” explains Renee. “Then the pandemic hit, and I was stuck homeschooling my daughter. So, I decided it was the best time to go back to school to better myself for my children.” Our online medical office billing and coding program made it possible for Renee to train for a new career while caring for family. We are so proud of Renee for graduating and reaching her goal!

What You Learn in a Medical Office Billing and Coding Program

For each graduate of a program, we highlight three different courses. During the program, Renee took courses such as: Medical Coding—Diagnosis, Health Care Records—Ethical Practices, and Regulatory Issues in Health Information.

In these courses, she learned about:

  • The ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision Clinical Modification) coding classification systems that classify morbidity and mortality information; and how to code medical diagnoses for medical insurance claims with emphasis placed on utilizing anatomy, physiology, and pathology in the selection of proper codes
  • Correctly handling patient health information as currently practiced in healthcare and medical offices with emphasis on privacy, security regulations, fraud, and overall industry compliance
  • Legal and regulatory issues in healthcare with emphasis on delivery of healthcare services; documentation of care; the rights and responsibilities of providers, employees, payers, and patients in a healthcare context; and legal terminology pertaining to civil liability and the judicial and legislative processes
