Graduate Highlight - David Beck
Have you ever opened your refrigerator to find that there was something wrong with the temperature? Maybe you've come back from a long day of work in the summer heat only to find that your air conditioner is malfunctioning. Desiring to be more self-sufficient and solve problems like these for himself and his family, David Beck decided to pursue a diploma in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration.
Mr. Beck was inspired to begin a career in HVACR by his grandfather. “My grandfather always had HVAC problems growing up, and I always wanted to help,” Mr. Beck recalls. At Stautzenberger College's Maumee campus, he finally had the chance to pursue this dream. The instructors there not only imparted their many years of HVACR knowledge and experience to him but also supported him when he faced personal challenges. “Mr. Mike Knitz was one of the best teachers I had,” Mr. Beck says.
While enrolled in the HVACR program, Mr. Beck was “becoming homeless and financially struggling,” he says. However, he knew that earning his diploma would allow him to have more opportunities for a better future. Mr. Beck persevered, finally graduating in April of 2019. Currently, he is employed by Wojo's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. Despite facing challenges along the way, Mr. Beck is glad that he chose to enter this career field. “If it weren't for Career Services, I wouldn't have the job of a lifetime,” he says.
