A Day in the Life: Accounting and Payroll Clerk
On October 02, 2020

You've always had an eye for detail. Whether it was checking your sibling's homework or organizing your room, nothing slipped past your keen eyes. When employees are counting on their paychecks each week, and every decimal place matters to an organization's success, your attention to detail becomes invaluable. My name's Claire, and I'd like to show you why becoming an accounting and payroll clerk could be the best decision you ever make.

What are Employers Looking for in Accounting and Payroll Clerks?

Being attentive and organized are essential qualities in accounting. You should have a system in place so you can find and present a document when requested. Computer skills are highly desirable in this field as most companies use spreadsheet and other record-keeping programs as well as communicate via email. Some accounting and payroll clerks interact with clients and the public regularly, so having excellent interpersonal skills could help you in your search for an employer. For those clerks who are given more independence to complete their work, being a self-starter is a necessity.

What is an Average Day Like for an Accounting and Payroll Clerk?

Depending on the size of the company, an accounting and payroll clerk may take on numerous responsibilities or focus on a few tasks. Since I work for a small business, I complete the majority of bookkeeping, payroll, and administrative tasks. My daily activities include: making the financial statements; copying, scanning, and filing receipts and other important documents; contacting clients; double-checking math; and reconciling differences that I find.

Although I can complete most of my work from my desk, I do occasionally drive to the post office, bank, and stores to run errands. Sometimes, I travel to clients to collect payments. My position requires me to keep track of many accounts. However, my organizational skills are well-suited to the challenge.
